The construction of this reservoir took place from 1907 to 1909 with the aim of suppling drinking water to the Busan area. As of 1910, the storage capacity was about 610,000 tons, which could serve the 45,000 person population of Busan for 150 days.

The water was collected through a network of protective canals, which flowed into a sedimentation tank. After sand and find gravel particles settled down, clear water was transported through underground channels for filtration. In case the stored water level reaches full capacity, a spillway was built to release surplus water into downstream farm land.

After completion of the construction of the Nakdonggang Water Supply System as the new municipal water service in 1972. Seongjigok Valley Reservoir supplied water for industrial use until January 1985 when it was shut down. Although it is no longer used to supply water, the proginal water service system's tanks and canals remain.
According to legend, a famous Silla-period(57 8 CE-935 CE) feng shui expert named Seongji wandered around the country looking for a sacred mountain.
When he arrived at this valley, he found it to be a most auspicious place, and thus named the valley after himself, as
